At last night's Second Saturday dance in Richmond we were treated to a spirited battle between Naomi Uyama and Samson Trinh. Much trash talking was thrown around and Samson marveled by competing with this iPod rather than a laptop. The ramdomly selected theme was a timely one: the economy. Here are their sets:
Naomi:
Pennies From Heaven, Count Basie
Nice Work If You Can Get It, Billie Hoiliday
Shake Your Moneymaker, Elmore James
Samson:
Money, the Beatles
I'm Just a Lucky So And So, Diana Krall
M-O-N-E-Y, Lyle Lovett and his Large Band
A really great battle! And the winner, selected by audience applause, was Naomi!
BTW, I neglected to post the October results. Donavon Stormer edged out Elizabeth Aldrich in a battle over education.
Come join us at future Second Saturdays at the Dance Space in Richmond for more editions of Iron DJ!

The holiday season is upon us and it will be evident at the Dance Space this Saturday! We have special guest DJs Bill Spiedel and Kait Mahar coming to play a mix of swingin' holiday and non-seasonal tunes. Bill will be coming off of his DJ tour of the southeast so he'll be in prime form as usual.
No Jam Cellar lesson at 6pm this month. And Iron DJ will be taking the month off as well but both will be back with abandon to start off the new year in January!
Come out for the beginner lindy lesson taught this month by Keith and Simona starting at 7:30pm. Then dance to the selections of our special DJs starting at 8:30pm. Partake in our selection of refreshments and compare your holiday shopping lists with others! 'Tis the season after all!

Tomorrow is the first Second Saturday dance of the new year. Let's start the year off right with an evening full of lindy hop/swing fun! Trey and Amy will be teaching the Lindy Level III class at 6pm and will cover some cool 30s charleston moves. After that at 7:30 will be the beginner lindy lesson taught by Andy (that's me) and Rita. As always no experience or a partner are necessary. Then starting at 8:30 we'll have tunes DJ'd by Victor Celenia from VA Beach, Mike Herring from C'ville, and yours truly.
We also have the return of Iron DJ (10pm) this month which will see the rookie (Mike) going up against the veteran (Victor) who is still looking for an Iron DJ win. Could he lose to another DJ from C'ville (you might remember Allison Ward prevailing in the infamous TV Shows battle)? Come on out and be part of the audience that determines the winner!
It's a Second Satuday full of optimism and hope for a great 2009. Be there!

It's a special Valentine's Day dance at Second Saturday Swing this month. Come on out and dance to tunes with a Valentine's theme. We'll also have non-Valentine's themed tunes for the anti-V-Day crowd so there will be something for everyone! Special goodies will be on hand and we'll see if there will be an Iron DJ comp. There may also be a special announcement so come out and see what's up!
NOTE: There will be no Jam Cellar lesson this month because all of the regular DC hipsters are hanging out with their SOs in and around the east coast. Unfortnately none of them live in Richmond. But next month we will have the return of Phil Onochie and his lovely wife Megan.
Beginner lindy hop lesson at 7:30pm. DJ'd tunes beginning at 8:30 and going until 11ish. Still just $6 and only $3 for students! Hope to see you all there!

How do we follow up last month's wildly fun Second Saturday Swing? With a wildly fun workshop and the return of Iron DJ of course! On the heels of our miserable Shim Sham last month, the simply wonderful Hope Folarin will be teaching the Al Minns version for the Lindy Level III workshop. It's got some really cool but easily learnable moves. Don't be late as there's lot to cover! The workshop starts at 6pm. You can check out what it looks like here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsX-xo3M1rs
After the workshop we'll have our beginner Lindy lesson at 7:30pm taught by Rita and Andy. Then we'll have the swingingest swing tunes for your dancing pleasure starting at 8:30. Tunes will be provided by Swing DJ's Andy (local yokel), Victor Celenia (VA Beach), and barring car troubles, the Second Saturday DJ debut of Kait Mahar (Hampton and formerly Knoxville). Victor and Kait will square off in the return of the fantastically popular Iron DJ. Don't forget to provide your ideas for the secret theme to which our competitors will tailor their 3-song sets. Audience applause determines the winner! See if Victor can score a hat trick by losing his third straight Iron DJ competition! He'll definitely have his hands full with Kait!
See you there!

This month we will pay tribute to Frankie Manning who passed away last week at the age of 94. Come and revel in his spirit to which we all owe a big ball of gratitude for this dance we love so much. We'll play some of Frankie's favorite tunes and have some special tributes. If you don't know who Frankie was then you should come and find out! All proceeds from the night will go to the Frankie Manning Fund.
Another huge reason to come out is that this month's Jam Cellar lesson will be a preview of the fun that is Jammin' on the James as we will have the lovely Naomi Uyama and the very tall Peter Strom here to teach us some lindy goodness.
Tunes at the dance will be provided by moi, Allison Ward from C'ville, and the aforementioned Ms. Uyama. Naomi has already stated her desire to defend her Iron DJ title and we're hoping to entice Mr. Strom to go up against her. We may even coax Peter into playing a set for our Frankie-inspired evening.
Anf if that all wasn't enough to get you to come out, I believe this month is the 7th anniversary of our first Usual Lindy Suspects Second Saturday Swing dance. Hard to believe it's been 7 years already!
Come on out and join in on the fun!

Wow, thanks everyone for a fun and inspiring eveing. Here are the results from a very spirited Iron DJ comp between two defending Iron DJs, Allison Ward and Naomi Uyama. This month's theme, picked at ramdom, was Tom and Jerry. The two sets were:
Allison:
Wholly Cats, Charlie Christian
Til Tom Special, Charlie Christian
Swing Sweet Pussycat, Atomic Fireballs
Naomi:
All The Cats Join In, Roy Eldridge,
We Cats Will Swing For You, The Cats and the Fiddle
Stray Cat Strut, The Stray Cats
And the winner by audience (and Peter's) applause: Naomi!
A fun battle, ladies! And there is now a moritorium on any cat-related themes. That is all.

We'll be having some fun at the Dance Space this weekend for this month's edition of Second Saturday Swing. Unfortunately all of the Jam Cellar folks are booked so there will be no 6pm workshop this week. But there will be the usual beginner Lindy Hop lesson at 7:30 and then dancing to DJ'd tunes beginning at 8:30. This month's DJs are (ahem) myself, Victor Celania, and we'll have the triumphant return of (DA da da da!) Audrey Anderson, direct from Japan!
Iron DJ, birthday jam, free refreshments (feel free to make requests of what you'd like to see in the future), and who knows what other craziness may occur. Just come on out and join in on all of the swingin' fun!
BTW, thanks to all who came last month. We were able to raise $200 for the Frankie Manning Fund!

Everybody Eats When They Come to My House, Cab Calloway
Memphis Blues, Sidney Bechet
Victor's set:
Bearcat, Rufus "Hound Dog" Thomas

A fun battle which really made the competitors put on their creative hats.

The topic of this month's Jam Cellar (Lindy Level III) workshop will be Balboa! Traveling down from the DC area to impart their Bal wisdom will be Phil and Meghan Onochie. This will be an intermediate level class so a working knowledge of the basic Bal footwork is necessary. The workshop will begin at 6pm and the cost is $8.
Lots going on at this month's Second Saturday Swing dance! After the beginner Lindy Hop lesson (starts at 7:30, free with paid admission to the dance) we'll have a DJ-o-rama starting at 8:30 wtih tunes provided by me (Andy) and Lindy Phil (the aforementioned Mr. Onochie) and the Second Saturday DJ debuts of Mssrs. John Ennis of Midlothian (formerly of Santa Barbara) and Michael Quisao (of the Dallas Quisao's) from Norfolk). So there will be lots of musical variety for your swing, blues, balboa, and charleston dancing pleasure.
Special announcements, Iron DJ (remember: you pick the theme!), and perhaps a birthday jam will be part of the fun so come on out!

It's hot outside. And it's gonna be hot inside at Second Saturday Swing this week! We'll start out at 6pm with our Lindy Level III workshop which will be a reprise of Hope Folarin's Al Minn's Shim Sham lesson. We didn't give folks decent notice last time and sadly only 3 people showed up. It is a seriously fun version of this line dance and hey, it was choreographed by a Lindy Hop master! And it's going to be taught by a great and fun dancer! Everyone should come out for this! See the man himself and his buddy Leon James doing it here:

After the beginner Lindy Hop lesson at 7:30, we'll have DJ'd tunes by Bill Speidel, Samson Trinh, and the Second Saturday debut of Meghan Hunter from C'ville. Iron DJ Speidel will defend his title against yours truly because Mr. Trinh is still devastated by his loss to Iron DJ Uyama in the infamous "Economy" battle. Remember to get your theme ideas in before 9:45pm.
Yes, it's gonna be hot. Good thing we have new AC units at the Dance Space. See you all there!
